 any ideas about power outlet?
« Thread Started on Aug 12, 2009, 6:52pm »

Im looking to install a 12 volt power adapter for a gps or cell phone charger. Does anyone have any good ideas on where to put it and how to go about mounting it. Looking around on the net and cant really find anything to work.
Possibly a pic or two would be great.
Thanks
Jeff

Best idea I came up with:

Went to Wal-Mart and picked up a 12v marine outlet (has a rubber, spring loaded cap and is sealed). Mounted using two zip-ties to the handlebars and wired into the aux port in the headlight bucket. Works great. Total cost: about $12.00

Just took this picture to give you some idea:

If cost isn't an objection... google "Powerplus". They make a very nice product and it looks great on the bike.

I had one on my Nomad; and would get another if ever needed.

What do you have to do to connect it into the headlight?

I have two. Went to Walmart and bought some outdoor (Marine) with the rubber caps. Tapped into the head light axulary power, than zip tied them to my phat II risers to the outside towards the wind shield. Now I use one for my GPS, and one for my cell phone etc..

I have 2 on my bike. One is handlebar mounted, the other is in the trunk. Here's the handlebar mounted one:

I mounted it between my risers. It's pretty inexpensive and looks much better than some of the real cheap alternatives.

I found a dual outlet at Auto Zone or O'Reillys. Its a plastic housing with rubber caps. I used a couple of clips, sorta like bicycle cable clips between the upright windshield bolts on the left side. Cut a slit into the cable cover on the handle bars and fed it into the headlight housing, covered the exposed wire with heat shrink. Inside the headlight I used a relay using the extra accessory power and and a keyed power wire, so it is only powered when the key is on.

I bought one at walmart that has a spring loaded cap with a seal so I don't have to remember to put the cap on when I unplug. It is mounted to the plastic neck cover right in front of the tank and wired into the headlight bucket. I will try to get a pic.

There are three wires that you will work with. Two of them are power and ground for an accessory circuit that is wired into the bike the other is the power for the headlight. You use a 12v relay with these so that the power outlet only has power when the headlight is on. You may have noticed that your headlight does not come on when you turn on the key but comes on after you hit the starter button. Another member sent me an excellent photo of the wiring inside the headlight bucket with the relay installed for a driving light project he did. I will see if I can find it and pm it to you. The wiring is really the same for an outlet.

I have both my outlets on constant power so I can charge my cellphone or MP3 player without having to have the ignition on. You could connect directly to the accessory connector in your headlight bucket.

I have 2 outlets on my Ruby, the Kuryakin mounted on the handlebar for the GPS and one on the rear bag guard. Brian installed the one on the rear guard 4 years ago since no one was manufacturing a nice looking one for the handlebars back then. I just got the one from Kuryakin a month ago and it looks pretty cool on the bar. I got the Kuryakin for $95 Canadian so it has to be cheaper in the States.

A standard walley world lighter with the "L" bracket can be mounted on any bolt on the rear side of the windshield, a little self sticking velcro on the bracket with stabilize the socket very well. This is the 78 cent method..

I painted mine flat black..
